Four key questions for everyday life

Itecor · May 29, 2020

  • Is it true?
  • Can you absolutely know it’s true?
  • How do you react – what happens – when you believe that thought?
  • Who would you be without that thought?

Turn the thought around

Today’s publication is a little bit different. I want to share one of my favorite author, a reference in realistic perspective. Byron Katie has developed a way to look at emotions and situations which I believe can help each and everyone of us in our life. This publication is a presentation of what she teaches to millions of humans around the world.

She calls it The Work. It will help define more precisely who you and what you are. Her method is very simple, yet powerful, and can be used everyday when a disturbing emotion appears.

It will help develop your resilience, at work and in your personal life.

Stage 1: Notice the emotion

Who or what upsets you? Why? Recall the specific situation when it happens. It can be done later in the day, or even later in your life. Just sit, relax and remind yourself of the situation. Rewind and live the past situation in the now, being present.

Find the reason you were upset

Stage 2: Write

Write down your thoughts. Capture them on paper in short, simple sentences. Write without censoring yourself, without being judgemental about what happened or what you felt. Take a deep breath and act as you were listening to a friend.

Discover the cause of your stress and emotions

Stage 3: the Fantastic Four

Once this is done, let’s ask yourself four essential questions:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Can you absolutely know it’s true?
  3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that
  4. thought?
  5. Who would you be without that thought?

By applying these four questions, you will dig deeper into yourself. Take a look at what you wrote about your previous emotions and apply the four questions.

Breathe and be patient, the answers will come to you naturally.

Stage 4: Turn it around

To work your way out of this, find the opposite of the original statement. It can be turned around to the self, to the other and to the opposite. It will help you understand the real sense of the emotion that affects you and will offer a solution out of it, in a positive manner.

Byron Katie offers a lot of tool on her website. As she says “everything you need to do The Work is available to you free on this website”. This is a reason I feel I can share this so openly.

To conclude, this is a great tool and can be used to help discover your true self. But it remains a tool, what you feel may not be based on correct assumptions but the emotion remains real, so treat yourself with kindness, always.
